The RSC Rothschild Foundation Digital Fellowships

15 January 2022

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is delighted to present three new Fellowship opportunities in partnership with The Rothschild Foundation. During the pandemic we have seen theatre reimagine its connection with audiences by embracing digital innovation, and the unique power of culture and creativity to engage, console and unite us. Through the RSC Rothschild Foundation Digital Fellowships programme  three unique Fellowships are now live and will support digital leaders of the future.

Between October 2021 and March 2022 Fellows will explore how new technologies could shape theatre in the future and what this could mean for audiences. This will involve testing and prototyping a technology pipeline, design or concept in one of three areas – audiences, production or creative.  The Fellowships will be delivered in collaboration between the RSC and leading pioneers and specialists in three priority areas: Epic Games, i2 media research and the University of Portsmouth.

Could this be the right opportunity for me?

We recognise that creative practitioner and freelancers have been adversely affected by the pandemic and are therefore targeting the Fellowships at the freelance community. These positions are offered as part time, six-month, temporary fixed term contracts commencing in October/November 2021. Fellows can apply from anywhere in the UK, and RSC will provide support towards travel and accommodation throughout the fellowship. Fellows will have expertise and experience in their field and an idea of what they want to focus on within one of the following three strands:

Audiences: Working with the RSC and i2 media research (an expert consumer insight and user experience research and strategy consultancy based at Goldsmiths, University of London).
Production: Working with the RSC and University of Portsmouth’s Centre for Creative and Immersive XR (CCIXR) – the UK’s first integrated facility to support innovation in the creative and digital technologies of virtual, augmented, and extended realities.
Creative: Working with the RSC and Epic Games, creators of Unreal Engine, the world’s most open and advanced real-time 3D creation tool.

The Fellowships will provide the opportunity to research and develop your own work. Within the three strands above, you can apply with an idea in mind, or create a project during your time. This idea does not necessarily need to be related to Shakespeare’s work – and are keen to hear from applicants who will push form and explore new ways
to engage and delight audiences.

The RSC is committed to being a diverse and inclusive organisation, accessible, welcoming and truly representative of the population of the UK, offering equality of opportunity to current and potential audiences and workforces.

To be considered for these opportunities, you do not need to have a prior connection to the RSC or its partners and are actively encouraging applications from freelancers who have not worked with RSC previously. To ensure inclusivity, RSC are not requesting
applicants’ education history details in application forms and are looking for Fellows with expertise and experience in their field, inviting you to upload videos, show reels or examples of previous work as appropriate.
