A grant was awarded to allow the Trust to run a literature in translation workshop at The Dairy for local teachers.

“The grant towards the training day for teachers from local primary and secondary schools has been wonderful in a range of ways: it has allowed us to strengthen our training offer…and has provided us with the most amazing locations within which to work.  It has meant for the first time we have been able to ‘reach out’ beyond usual suspects, and it has been wonderful to work with schools and partners in the geographical area around Waddesdon Manor.” – Stephen Spender Trust staff member

In June 2017 fifteen teachers from schools in the Waddesdon area spent the day with The Stephen Spender Trust and Translators in Schools. Hosted at The Dairy, Waddesdon Manor, the training day aimed to provide teachers with a deeper understanding of the needs and opportunities presented by diverse multilingual classrooms and to experience creative multilingual workshops with professional translators.

The Stephen Spender Trust’s Translators in Schools programme was launched in 2013 as a professional development programme to widen the pool of translators and teachers with the skills to run creative translation workshops in schools. Its strong training offer and events continue to promote the benefits of multilingual activities on language learning and National Curriculum objectives in literacy, modern language and citizenship.

“Amazing – venue, staff, food…impressive and exciting that [the Rothschild Foundation] are working to improve education / children’s lives.” – Teacher attendee at Training day

Using interactive taster workshops which explored a creative, visual and multicultural approach to translation, the training day provided local teachers with the skills to identify opportunities for creative multilingual work within their own school. The Stephen Spender Trust will now work with local schools to pair them with professional translators to deliver activity in school for the further benefit of local children and young people.
