The Rothschild Foundation Hanadiv Europe is a philanthropic foundation that supports a range of projects across Europe focused on preserving and showcasing Jewish cultural heritage and strengthening and sustaining Jewish communal life. Hanadiv Europe supports archives, libraries, museums, universities, cultural institutions and Jewish communal organisations.

Funding is focused on three key areas:

  • Academic Jewish Studies – to support rigorous, systematic research and education in Academic Jewish Studies throughout Europe.
  • European Jewish Heritage – to encourage organisations holding Jewish documentary heritage and items of Jewish significance, to make them as accessible as possible to a diverse audience.
  • Jewish Communal Life – recognising Jewish communal professional and volunteers for their contribution to supporting and enhancing Jewish life. The grants programme provides support so they can make an even greater difference to the Jewish communities.

The Illuminated River project was developed through a collaboration between the Rothschild Foundation, the Lord Major of London and a large number of stakeholders along the Thames.

It is the longest permanent public art commission in the world at 3.2 miles in length, lighting nine bridges along the River Thames in central London. The design for the artwork is a collaboration between US artist Leo Villareal and British architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.

Illuminated River celebrates the structure of architectural, social and historical landmarks, creating a symbolic link across political, financial and cultural centres of the capital.

Yad Hanadiv was founded by Dorothy de Rothschild in 1957, latterly chaired by the late Lord Rothschild from 1989 until 2018 and currently chaired by Dame Hannah Rothschild.

It is dedicated to creating resources for advancing Israel as a healthy, vibrant, democratic society, committed to Jewish values and equal opportunity for the benefit of all its inhabitants, carrying forward the philanthropic tradition of the Rothschild family.

It has funded major projects in Israel including the building of the Knesset and Supreme Court and, most recently, the new National Library of Israel.

Founded in 1993 by Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover with the aim of preserving, conserving and developing the important ancient city of Butrint.

Butrint is situated on the southwest coast of Albania. It was an important city from Hellenistic through Roman to Byzantine and Venetian times until its was abandoned in the 16th century. Set in a marshy landscape between Lake Butrint and the busy straits separating Corfu from Albania, it is an archaeological and environmental haven.

The Foundation oversaw archaeological excavations at Butrint between 1997 and 2004, the main findings relating to a substantial Roman settlement. The Foundation continues today, administered by the Rothschild Foundation and jointly funded by the Rothschild Foundation and the Linbury Trust.

The project has gone beyond archaeological discoveries, with emphasis placed on conservation, tourism and training for Albanian archaeologists and heritage professionals.
