The Butrint Foundation was founded in 1993 by Lord Rothschild and Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover with the aim of preserving, conserving and exploring the Butrint site in Albania.

Butrint is a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage site in southern Albania, on the Straits of Corfu. Nestled in a lush national park, it acts as a microcosm of Mediterranean history, featuring ancient Greek ruins, a Roman theatre, Byzantine basilicas, and a Venetian castle.

The Butrint Foundation oversaw archaeological excavations at Butrint between 1997 and 2004, as well as smaller projects since then. The records held at Waddesdon consist of the archaeological archive recording finds and work undertaken as well as governance records and significant publications produced by the Foundation.
